In 1996 the University of Lincoln opened its Brayford campus at the side of the Brayford Pool. Development of the area has continued significantly around the university campus ever since. The grounds of the University campus are open to the public and visitors to the city of Lincoln.

Since the university opened 7,000 students have moved to the city and the university now employs almost 1,000 people.
